Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost?
Many factors influence our fees, including the clinician’s level of experience, expertise, and the value of high-quality, evidence-based care. Our rates are thoughtfully set to remain competitive with other therapists and practices in the Middle Tennessee area while ensuring that we provide the best possible support for our clients.

No Surprises Act: Out-of-network providers are required by law to estimate direct service costs.
If you would like an individualized "good faith estimate" of treatment for the next year, please contact us and we will discern this with the best of our abilities.
Do you take insurance?
We do not accept insurance, as our priority is providing the highest quality, client-centered care without the restrictions often imposed by insurance companies. Many clients choose to pay out-of-pocket because insurance can come with privacy concerns, limitations on diagnoses and treatment, session caps, and potential impacts on permanent health records. By remaining out-of-network, we can fully tailor treatment to your needs rather than being restricted by insurance requirements.
That said, we understand the importance of making therapy accessible. We’re happy to provide superbills upon request which are detailed receipts you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement, depending on your specific plan. If you’re unsure about your out-of-network benefits, we encourage you to reach out to your insurance provider to explore your options (and see the next question & answer below!). And if using insurance is a priority, we’d be happy to provide referrals for providers who are in-network with your plan.
How do I find out if I will get reimbursement from a superbill?
If you are considering using a superbill for reimbursement, you are responsible for submitting it to your insurance company. Many of our clients have received partial or full reimbursement (typically 50-100% of their out-of-pocket costs), but coverage varies based on individual insurance plans. If you are unsure whether your insurance will reimburse you for services with our practice, we strongly recommend contacting your provider to clarify your benefits. Please note that payment for your session is due at the time of service, regardless of whether you plan to seek reimbursement.
If you are hoping to receive reimbursement from your insurance, we suggest calling your insurance company and asking the following questions:
1. Does my plan cover out-of-network benefits for outpatient behavioral counseling?
The most common CPT Codes: 90791 (initial assessment), 90832 (30-minute session), 90834 (45-minute session—most common), 90837, (60 minutes), 90846, 90847, and 90853 (different types of family/couples therapy sessions).
If yes, how many sessions are allowed per plan year?
Do I have preventative benefits for behavioral counseling?
Does my plan cover diagnosis Z or V code with CPT code 90834? If yes, how many sessions are allowed per plan year?
2. Does my plan only cover behavioral therapy visits considered “medically necessary”?
3. Do I have a deductible to meet first? If yes, how much?
4. What is my co-pay or co-insurance amount for outpatient counseling?
5. My therapist provides superbill receipts for our sessions. How do I submit these for reimbursement, and how long does the process take to receive a financial return?
Can I use my Flexible Spending Health Account or Health Savings Account for payment?
Yes! Clients can typically pay for services with flex spending (FSA) or HSA cards!
HOW DO I GET TO YOUR office?
The address is: 103 Continental Place, Suite 204, Brentwood, TN 37027
Once you turn on Continental Pl, you'll go down to the end of the culdesac, and our building is the one on the left, #103 (it has a flag pole in front of it). Feel free to park anywhere! There is an elevator or stairs you can take to the second floor, and you will see frosted doors that say “Therapy Space.” Inside is the waiting room, and please “check in” on the iPad by finding your therapist’s name and then typing in your initials.

what is the best way to contact you?
If you are a current client, we highly recommend using your client portal for messaging your therapist, as it is the most secure. If you are a new client, emailing who you would be interested in connecting with, either laura@tuliptreecounseling.com, shelby@tuliptreecounseling.com, or taylor@tuliptreecounseling.com is typically the quickest way to connect, and we will try to respond no later than 48 hours. Please follow up and send another message if we don’t respond within 48 hours. We have the best intentions to respond promptly, but emails and other administrative tasks can sometimes pile up and get lost in the shuffle.
How frequently do you meet with clients?
We see clients weekly or bi-weekly, depending on what’s most clinically appropriate. The overall length of counseling services varies widely from person to person. Feel free to ask your therapist about their recommendation— we’re here to collaborate with you to create a clinically appropriate and reasonable schedule with your calendar.
How do I access my telehealth sessions?
Your unique video appointment link will be texted or emailed to you (whichever you prefer). Before joining the appointment, make sure to update to the latest Telehealth app version.
What does LPC/MHSP stand for?
LPC/MHSP stands for Licensed Professional Counselor with a Mental Health Service Provider Designation. In Tennessee, we have a two-tiered licensing system. The LPC/MHSP means that the practitioner can “prevent, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional or behavioral disorders and associated disorders which interfere with mental health.”
Requirements for LPC/MHSP licensure include:
Hold a master's degree in counseling from an accredited program, which includes sixty (60) graduate hours in counseling and completion of a supervised field experience as either a practicum or internship that consists of a minimum of five hundred (500) clock hours of training, at least three hundred (300) of which must be completed in a mental health or community agency setting.
Complete two (2) years of professional experience, which consists of at least 1500 hours of face-to-face counseling, 1500 hours of clinically related work, and 150 hours of consultation with an approved supervisor “in a clinical setting that provides substantial opportunities to diagnose, treat, appraise and assess mental disorders.”
Pass the National Counselor Examination & the Tennessee Jurisprudence Exam as administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
Pass the National Clinical Mental Health Examination (NCMHCE) as administered by the NBCC.
What does LPC/MHSP (temp) stand for?
LPC/MHSP (temp) stands for Licensed Professional Counselor with a Mental Health Service Provider Designation (Temporary). This credential is granted to individuals in Tennessee who have completed all educational and examination requirements and are in the final stages of licensure, completing their post-graduate supervised experience.
Therapists with a temporary designation are working under the supervision of a board-approved LPC/MHSP supervisor and are permitted to provide counseling services while they complete their clinical hours toward full licensure.
Taylor Alley, LPC/MHSP (temp), is currently practicing under the supervision and license of Laura Hamilton, LPC-MHSP (license #3997), and receives regular consultation to ensure ethical, effective, and client-centered care.
